The Process Makes All the Difference
For our clients, a few things set Jim Martin Design apart from the rest. One of those things is a process they actually enjoy.
The Jim Martin Design Process
1. Concept Development & Project Planning
Our process begins with an on-site meeting to dive into your project goals. We start by understanding your vision — what you want the finished space to look and feel like. At the same time, we assess whether the existing area supports that vision. If adjustments are needed, we’ll explore creative solutions together.
Next, we collect key details about your current space and develop early concept drawings to bring your ideas to life. We’ll share these preliminary designs with you, take in your feedback, and refine the concept until it aligns perfectly with your expectations. Once we’ve defined a clear direction, we’ll move into the next stage of the design journey.
2. Materials, Fixtures, & Detailed Design Development
With the overall concept in place, the next step is to refine the design through careful selection of materials and fixtures. This stage often involves visiting our trusted suppliers to explore options for cabinetry, countertops, plumbing fixtures, flooring, tile, and more. It’s a hands-on, collaborative process where we draw on expert input from industry partners to ensure every detail supports your vision. For larger or more complex projects, we’ll also coordinate with architects or engineers as needed.
As we finalize selections, we’ll gather accurate pricing details and prepare a comprehensive project agreement. This document includes finalized drawings and a detailed scope of work based on the materials and design choices we’ve developed together. Once you’re satisfied with everything, we’ll proceed by signing the contract and collecting the initial deposit, setting the stage for ordering materials and scheduling your build.
3. Site Work
This phase is where all the groundwork we’ve done really starts to pay off. We bring in our dependable team of skilled tradespeople to carry out everything from demolition to final inspection. Throughout the process, we keep you informed about what’s happening and how the work is progressing.
4. Final Touches
One of the most common frustrations during a remodel is when momentum fades and progress stalls. We take pride in our ability to keep things moving steadily. As a small, tightly knit team, we dedicate our full attention to every project, ensuring it doesn’t lose momentum.
As the finish line nears, it’s usual for punch-list items and minor service tasks to crop up. We make it a priority to handle those promptly and thoroughly (during and after the major work) to ensure you’re truly satisfied with the outcome.

Our Process Makes the Remodeling Experience Pleasant for You
If you’ve ever hired a designer or contractor for a home remodeling project, you may know how disorganization, delays, and miscommunication can spoil the entire experience. Even if the results are impressive, you’ll always remember how frustrated you felt.
When we say our remodeling process is enjoyable, it’s often met with skepticism. That comes as no surprise, because most home renovation projects come with their fair share of hassles.
However, at Jim Martin Design, we utilize our expertise to identify potential complications. Our experience working with discerning clients has taught us to prioritize communication and timeliness.
Some Process Highlights
The first part of the process involves informing you about the process. Yes, you read that correctly. You’ll never have to wonder “how this will go,” because you’ll know the entire plan, from beginning to end, before we even start.
You’ll have the opportunity to handle actual samples of materials that we recommend for your remodel. After all, how can you decide with pictures alone?
Every step of the process will be explained to you. What’s happening, why, and what’s next.
You’ll be able to follow along with everything going on in your home using the BuilderTrend portal. There, you’ll find a day-to-day schedule that the project manager, subcontractors, and you share.
Our Experience Supports the Process
